Custom Cx — Mokume-Gane
Every Carbon Cx Mokume-Gane razor begins with a layered metal billet whose pattern develops through forging, machining and finishing. No two components reveal the material in exactly the same way.
The photographs on this page show examples of Mokume-Gane razors we have completed in the past. They demonstrate the material and craftsmanship rather than inventory currently available for immediate purchase.
We complete custom Mokume pieces individually and contact interested customers as a razor approaches completion.
Before purchasing, you will see photographs of the actual finished piece and confirm your preferred available Cx configuration.
No deposit. No obligation. Each piece is considered individually.
The Japanese Art of Wood-Grain Metal
Mokume-Gane is a Japanese metalworking tradition based on bonding layers of contrasting non-ferrous metals into a single billet.
The name is commonly translated as “wood-grain metal”, describing the organic patterns produced by its different metal layers.
For our custom Cx razors, we work with a copper-and-brass Mokume-Gane.
The pattern isn't printed or engraved onto the surface.
It exists throughout the material.
As the Cx is machined, different sections of those layers are exposed, so the exact appearance of a finished component cannot be completely predicted beforehand.
The engineering remains controlled. The material provides the variation.
A Material That Continues to Change
Mokume has another characteristic that separates it from Stainless Damascus and titanium: its surface evolves.
The copper-rich material reacts naturally with air, moisture, skin oils and its surroundings. Over time, the polished surface can darken, shift in color and develop a natural patina.
Some owners prefer to periodically restore a brighter finish.
Others allow the razor to age naturally.
Neither approach is inherently better.
The changing surface is part of Mokume's character.
Built Around the Cx
A Mokume Cx retains the precision geometry used throughout the Cx platform.
The material changes the appearance, substantial weight and tactile experience of the razor. Your selected base plate determines the fundamental shave.
Mild (–) | .71 mm
Our mildest option. Recommended for those who prefer less blade feel, shave frequently or have sensitive skin.
Original | .68 mm
The original Cx configuration, with more noticeable blade feel and considerable control through shaving angle.
Plus (+) | .88 mm
A versatile balance of efficiency and reduced blade feel. A strong choice for denser growth or shaving every few days.
Plus Plus (++) | 1.08 mm
Our most efficient option, intended for heavier growth, longer intervals between shaves or those who simply prefer greater efficiency.

How a Custom Mokume Cx Is Offered
Custom Mokume razors are completed individually rather than maintained as conventional inventory.
Enter your email below to express interest in a future piece.
As a Mokume Cx approaches completion, we'll contact interested customers, confirm the available configuration and preferred base plate, and send photographs of the actual finished razor.
Because every Mokume pattern is different, seeing the individual piece is an important part of the process.
If it's the right razor for you, you can purchase it.
If not, simply pass or wait for another piece.
There is no deposit or obligation simply to express interest.

The Character of Mokume
No two Mokume components reveal the same arrangement of layers.
Pattern, color and surface character are expected to vary, and the natural patina will continue to evolve according to handling and environment.
That isn't a flaw to be eliminated.
A Carbon Mokume Cx begins as a one-of-one piece and becomes more individual with use.
Caring for Mokume-Gane
After shaving, rinse the razor thoroughly and allow it to dry.
Use warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush for normal cleaning.
Because the surface naturally patinas, avoid aggressive polishing unless your intention is specifically to brighten or alter the existing patina.
