Cx-Hada - Limited Edition 4 of 6

Hada is the Japanese word for surface or skin. In traditional Japanese swordmaking, it describes the grain-like structure revealed in forged steel—the visible record of how the material was worked, folded and shaped.

That idea became the inspiration for the Cx-Hada.

At the center of the razor is a cap made from Mokume-Gane, a Japanese metalworking tradition whose name translates roughly to “wood-grain metal.” Rather than steel, the material used for the Hada combines layers of copper and brass, creating flowing patterns that emerge differently in every piece.

The Mokume-Gane cap is paired with a High Polish C110 copper Web base plate and S1 handle, creating a razor whose surface will continue to change long after it leaves our shop. The copper and brass are left uncoated, allowing oxidation, handling and use to gradually develop a patina unique to its owner.

Only six Cx-Hada razors will be made.

Each begins with its own pattern. Each will continue to evolve differently over time.

Hada — The Story Beneath the Surface

In Japanese, hada means surface or skin.

Within the tradition of Japanese swordmaking, the word has another meaning. Hada describes the visible grain or texture of forged steel—the structure revealed through the process of making the blade.

It isn't a pattern simply placed onto the finished surface. It is evidence of what happened to the material along the way.

That idea became the starting point for this Limited Edition.

The Cx-Hada does not attempt to reproduce traditional Japanese sword steel. Instead, it explores a related idea through another Japanese metalworking tradition: Mokume-Gane.

Both celebrate something we find particularly compelling—the ability of a material and the process used to make it to become part of the finished object's identity.

The surface tells the story of how the material was made.

Mokume-Gane — Wood-Grain Metal

The defining material of the Cx-Hada is its copper-and-brass Mokume-Gane cap.

Mokume-Gane is a Japanese decorative metalworking tradition developed centuries ago. Its name translates roughly to “wood-grain metal”, a reference to the flowing patterns created by its layered construction. Your original Hada page connects the material to decorative work associated with the swords of the samurai.

The Hada cap combines layers of copper and brass into a forged material whose pattern extends through the metal rather than simply sitting on its surface.

After the material is machined into a Cx cap, it is individually finished with a very fine bead-blasted satin surface and heat developed to bring additional contrast to the pattern.

Because the structure of the material changes throughout the forged billet, every cap reveals a different pattern.

The geometry is repeatable. The Mokume pattern is not.

Limited to Six

The Cx-Hada is a Limited Edition of six individually finished razors.

All six share the same fundamental design and material combination, but no two Mokume-Gane caps reveal exactly the same pattern.

Each piece is individually identified by its place within the six-piece edition.

And because the copper and brass are allowed to patina naturally, the differences between the six razors will become even greater with time.

Once all six Cx-Hada razors have been completed, the edition is finished.

Six pieces. Six patterns. Six surfaces that will continue to evolve.

Availability

Our Limited Editions are finished individually, one razor at a time. They are not produced or kept in continuous inventory.

When the next piece is finished, we make it available on the website and email customers who have asked to be notified.

Because each release may consist of only a single razor, receiving a notification does not reserve the piece. The finished razor is made available to everyone on the notification list and remains available until purchased.

A Surface Designed to Evolve

The Cx-Hada is intentionally left uncoated.

The C110 copper used for the handle and Web base plate, along with the copper and brass within the Mokume-Gane cap, will react naturally to handling, moisture, air and the environment.

Over time, the bright surfaces can darken, deepen and develop a patina.

That change is not considered a flaw in the Hada. It is part of the idea behind the razor.

The razor you receive will not look exactly the same years from now as it does today. How quickly it changes—and what that surface ultimately looks like—will depend on how it is used, handled and cared for.

You can periodically restore some of the original brightness if you prefer, or simply allow the metals to age naturally.

The material is intended to record time and use.

Copper Beneath the Mokume

The remainder of the Cx-Hada is machined from C110 copper, approximately 99.9% copper.

The Web base plate and S1 handle receive our High Polish finish, creating a bright surface that contrasts with the more organic pattern and satin character of the Mokume-Gane cap.

Copper also gives the Hada a very different physical character from our titanium Limited Editions.

At approximately 98 grams, the complete Cx-Hada has a substantial presence in the hand.

As the razor ages, the polished copper, brass and Mokume surfaces can each develop their own character.

One razor. Multiple metals. A surface that never completely stops changing.

The S1 Handle

The Cx-Hada uses our S1 handle, inspired by the distinctive handle geometry of the Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife used by special forces during World War II.

Rather than reproduce the knife literally, the S1 translates elements of its recognizable ringed and hourglass-like form into the proportions and function of a modern safety-razor handle.

For the Hada, the S1 is machined from C110 copper and finished to a High Polish.

Its full-length 92 mm / 3.6-inch profile contributes to the substantial feel of the Hada while providing the same familiar S1 geometry used across several of our Limited Editions.

Built Around the Cx

The materials and story make the Hada unique, but underneath them it remains a Cx.

The thin head profile, Cx Pinch Design with close-edge blade support, and distinctive Web base plate retain the fundamental engineering of the platform.

The Mokume-Gane and copper determine the weight, appearance and evolving character of the razor. Your selected Cx base plate determines the fundamental shaving characteristics.

Our mildest option. Recommended for those who prefer less blade feel, shave frequently or have sensitive skin.

The original Cx configuration, with more noticeable blade feel and considerable control through shaving angle.

Plus (+) | .88 mm

A versatile balance of efficiency and reduced blade feel. A strong choice for denser growth or shaving every few days.

Plus Plus (++) | 1.08 mm

Our most efficient option, intended for heavier growth, longer intervals between shaves or those who simply prefer greater efficiency.

Because of the nature of Mokume-Gane and individual finishing, pattern, color and surface characteristics will vary from piece to piece. Small machining or finishing characteristics may be visible under magnification or on functional surfaces where preserving critical dimensions takes priority.

Caring for the Cx-Hada

After shaving, rinse the razor thoroughly and allow it to dry.

For periodic cleaning or when changing blades, disassemble the razor and use warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush.

The copper and brass are uncoated and will naturally develop patina. This is an expected characteristic of the materials and part of the evolving character of the Cx-Hada. Your existing page likewise specifies that the razor is not sealed or coated and that the patina will evolve.

If you prefer the naturally aged surface, simply allow the metals to develop over time.

Avoid aggressive abrasives, particularly on the Mokume-Gane cap, as they can alter the individually finished surface and pattern contrast.
